Habibie Award

The Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie Award, better known as the Habibie Award, is an annual award given to individuals or groups who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of science and technology.

The granting process of the Habibie Award begins with nominations submitted for individuals or groups considered worthy of receiving the award. Nominations can be made by public or private universities, the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI), research institutions, professional organizations, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Indonesian embassies abroad, embassies of friendly countries in Indonesia, and individuals. The nominees are then evaluated by experts from various disciplines who serve as members of the Habibie Award Selection Committee.

The Habibie Award winner will receive:
a. A Medal
b. A Certificate of Recognition
c. A cash prize of US$ 25,000

Program Objectives

The award is expected to encourage Indonesian citizens to produce their best works that benefit the nation and state. The main objectives of this program are:

To recognize individuals who are actively engaged and have made significant contributions in the discovery, development, and dissemination of innovative science and technology activities that have a meaningful impact on improving welfare, justice, and peace.

To help develop excellent human resources in Indonesia with strong faith and piety, capable of mastering, developing, and managing science and technology independently for the glory of the nation and the people of Indonesia.

The Habibie Award has been held since 1999 by the SDM Iptek Foundation, established on May 12, 1997 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. B.J. Habibie, Dr. Hasri Ainun Habibie, Dr.-Ing. Ilham Akbar Habibie, and Dipl.-Ing. Thareq Kemal Habibie. The organizational structure of the SDM Iptek Foundation consists of:

  • Chairman of the Board of Trustees: Dipl.-Ing. Thareq Kemal Habibie
  • Chairman of the Board: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wardiman Djojonegoro
  • Chairman of the Supervisory Board: Prof. Dr. Dewi Fortuna Anwar

The SDM Iptek Foundation has two main programs: providing scholarships (domestic and international) and granting the Habibie Award. Since 2011, the Foundation has focused on the Habibie Award. In 2020, the award was renamed the Habibie Prize through collaboration with the Ministry of Research and Technology / BRIN.
